During the rational drug design phase of the 1980s, effective materials management was an important, but not crucial, aspect of the drug discovery process. However, during the 1990s, as drug discovery methods became increasingly automated and probabilistic, efficient management of materials became a critical component of the drug discovery process.

This section will define materials management, describe its current role in drug discovery, and discuss future trends in the field. With a focus on the management of chemical reagents,  natural products, and proprietary compounds, the section will explore both automation technology, which is used for management of the physical materials, and materials management information technology, which is central to an overall drug discovery informatics environment.
